In Britain, our towns and cities are a treasure trove of hidden history, with 6,000 years of human habitation encased in the earth beneath our feet. Now, The Great British Dig challenges British communities to get their hands dirty and uncover the history... that is, literally, in their back gardens.

Presented by Hugh Dennis, The Great British Dig sees a team of archaeologists, historians and experts spend a week in Maidstone, Kent, where it’s thought the remains of a Roman settlement may lie below the unassuming terraced houses of Florence Road.

Hugh turns on the charm to go door-to-door, recruiting locals to let the team dig up their gardens in the search for Roman remains. And he isn’t short of volunteers, with residents of all ages rolling up their sleeves to get to work.

As the community comes together to help archaeologists Richard Taylor, Chloe Duckworth, the discovery of small fragments of Roman pots build hopes of uncovering something bigger.

With evidence of an early Roman settlement mounting, The Great British Dig experts bring to life what a Roman complex on the site of Florence Road may have looked like in the second century. But will they discover enough to confirm what really lay beneath this everyday residential street centuries ago?
