Warren Thompson just wants an easy life. He’s happy with a clean house, a neat garden, and a nice cup of tea. But thanks to his naturally difficult personality, Warren is constantly finding himself in sticky situations. He’s always making life difficult... for himself. He’s always on the verge of losing it.

Fifteen years ago Warren was content; a bachelor working for the civil service and living alone. Fast forward and Warren is now a driving instructor, living with his partner Anne and her two sons, and is struggling to adapt to the role of ‘husband’, ‘father’ and ‘brother/son-in-law’. Not blessed with patience, empathy, or any kind of paternal instinct whatsoever, Warren and nervous learners were never destined to mix. Cantankerous, blunt and grumpy, he just about tolerates a couple of his pupils while the rest he simply can’t stand.

And to top it all off, he hates where he’s living. When Warren reluctantly agreed to move up to Preston (where Anne is from originally), he thought it might at least be cheaper and equate to a nicer standard of living - but unsurprisingly Warren’s already sick of it. It’s cold, miserable, and he never was a fan of Northerners.

Like Larry David, Warren is petty, argumentative and difficult - but he also has his own internal logic. We understand why Warren does these things, even if we ourselves would never dream of acting in such a way. And Warren’s not a bad person. He loves Anne to bits and would always do the right thing when the time comes. It’s just that his moral compass is pointing in slightly the wrong direction...
