A true story of love and loyalty and a fight for justice, told through a compelling police procedural.

In 2006, with retirement looming, Detective Chief Inspector Clive Driscoll was assigned the job of closing down Deptford Police station... and handing it over for conversion into flats. Driscoll found the station, though empty of police officers, still had two squad cars in the yard and rooms full of filing cabinets relating to dozens of unsolved cases. One room was bursting with cabinets containing the files of Operation Fishpool. Driscoll realised that this was the material relating to the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

The murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 by a group of white boys shouting: “What? What? N*****!” and the Metropolitan Police’s failure to bring his killers to justice had shocked the UK. It sparked a campaign led by his parents Doreen and Neville Lawrence which ultimately resulted in a public inquiry which found that the Metropolitan Police was “institutionally racist”.

However, the criminal case made little progress as attempts to bring the killers to justice petered out and the case languished in the long grass. This was until Driscoll read some of the documents in Deptford and went to his superiors demanding that they re-open the case.

Working alongside Doreen and Neville, Driscoll pursued new evidential techniques to build a case and in 2012 Gary Dobson and David Norris were both convicted of the murder of Stephen Lawrence at the Old Bailey.

This 3-part drama is a gripping and emotional tale about the ultimately successful conviction of two of the suspects in Britain’s most infamous murder. But it’s also the story of an investigation which was beset by hostility, obstruction and outright sabotage and which exposed astonishing levels of complacency, racism and outright corruption within Britain’s largest police force. It shows Driscoll, Doreen and Neville, together with a group of police officers battling to secure the convictions in the teeth of resistance from their own force. Ultimately Driscoll has to choose if his loyalty lies with the police force, or with Stephen’s family.
