86% of Brits went on holiday last year, but only 60% of them could afford to go overseas. The average British family spends £2,417 on a 9 day holiday which is a huge sum of money for many families at the poorer end of the wealth divide. But 77% of families... say a good holiday is ‘priceless’ and the only way of getting essential quality time together- according to a recent survey, thanks to things like work, commuting and financial pressures the average family spends just 49 minutes a day in quality time with each other and many people consider watching TV together to be part of that.
Two families swap the holiday they would normally take for one they would never consider- it might be beyond their means or completely outside their comfort zone- to see if how the other half holidays is REALLY all we believe it is and whether we could all rethink what makes a family holiday special.
This warm-hearted show will take our contributors and viewers on a brand new adventure as we shine a spotlight on whether expensive holidays really are the answer to bringing a family together and whether you need to spend a fortune to have a great time.
From a wealthy family who only ever holiday overseas in 5-star resorts to a single mum who saves all year just to be able to take her family camping in Wales for a week – each holiday swap is designed to be an eye-opening experience for our families and the viewers at home.
During their week away on holiday the families will try a whole range of activities that are very new to them, throwing themselves into experiences they’ve never even thought of trying. A family who love lying by the pool and propping the bar up every night might be hiking in the Alps or pony trekking across Greece whilst an action-packed family might find themselves on an island retreat with nothing much to do but chill out on the beach.
Our poorer family may long for that dream holiday in a luxury resort but what will they learn about themselves and what new adventures will open up their world? And when they are presented with the bill for their holiday, how will they react to the sum of money they have burned through?
