Parallel worlds of light and dark have always existed on Ibiza. Its world famous club scene pulls in 35% of the island's GDP and last year... super-clubs saw profits rise 40% on 2019 levels. But now, with good times on the island increasingly only available to the wealthy, Zara will explore this tantalising new face of the island, but also the dark economy that underpins the island's glamorous, lnstagrammable exterior.
The growing wealth divide is squeezing out younger tourists and driving those trying to work the season out here to get caught up in the island's underbelly - dealing drugs to afford drinks at the super clubs or joining OnlyFans to make ends meet.
And the wealthier the island's visitors, the more criminals it attracts, changing the face of crime on the island. lbiza's crime rate increased by 36% last year, violent residential burglary doubled, and last August saw a single drug raid capture 16.4 kilos of cocaine, 5.6 kilos of ketamine and marijuana, 87,000 ecstasy tablets, as well as three guns and a sub-machine gun with a silencer.
