The Atlantic coast of the British Isles is renowned as one of the most dangerous and hostile coastlines in the world, yet for thousands of years people have come to live and work there. Following in their footsteps is writer and journalist Adam Nicolson.... Adam has taken out a second mortgage to buy The Auk, a 42 foot sailing boat, to sail up the west coast of Britain. From the Isles of Scilly, around the west coast of Ireland, through the Hebrides, to Orkney and beyond. It's a 1,500 mile sea journey along one of the world's greatest landscapes. On his journey he explores the history of the west coast, trying to discover what originally drew people to live on the edge of Britain. He also finds out who still lives here today and how their lives are being shaped by the power of the Atlantic.
