GABRIEL GATEHOUSE INVESTIGATES SATOSHI NAKAMOTO IN EXPERIMENTAL SERIES
10 February

The mysterious creator of Bitcoin is the subject of a Keo Films digital documentary order from Channel 4.

Seeking Satoshi: The Mystery Bitcoin Creator is fronted by podcaster and journalist Gabriel Gatehouse, who sets out to find out the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of cryptocurrency Bitcoin, who has been AWOL since 2011 and could be among the richest people in the world.

On the trail of the shadowy founder, Gatehouse uncovers what could be a conspiracy to end democracy and transform the world as we know it, touching on Donald Trumps return to the US presidency, aided by Elon Musk.

The doc explores how the individuals and ideas at the heart of Bitcoins creation have since travelled from the tech fringes to the centre of politics.

Keos doc marks an experimental schedule for C4, with it being released as a 5 x 20-minute series on C4s YouTube channel, followed by a launch on its VoD platform.

It will then air later on main channel as a two-part series.

Gatehouse is the former international editor at Newsnight and hosts BBC Sounds podcast The Gathering Storm, which delves into the conspiracy theories that returned Trump to the White House.

Seeking Satoshi: The Mystery Bitcoin Creator was commissioned by Sacha Mirzoeff out of the docs and fact-ent department. Will Anderson and Andrew Palmer serve as executive producers, with Cath Boggan producing/directing. Xavier Alford series directs and Simon Sykes is editor.

Mirzoeff said: Its been so exciting to work on such innovate documentaries with Gabriel Gatehouse [and the Keo team].

The results push documentaries to new spaces in form, in length and in ways well try to reach audiences. What weve landed with is a fun, journalistic, gonzo journey working out who Satoshi Nakamoto could be, but which also gives eye-opening insights about what the Bitcoin project has come to mean today and in the future.

Anderson added: We have had enormous fun stirring together Gabriels superb podcasting skills with Keos documentary-making experience and coming up with these new docu-casts for Channel 4.

Starting with a simple question about the inventor of Bitcoin took us on five revealing romps into hidden worlds, and together these short films combine to say something profound about the state of democracy today, and where we are headed next.

Gatehouse revealed the quest to find Nakamoto quickly morphed from a manhunt for the most mysterious figure in tech, to a surreal quest to uncover a potential plot by a group of Silicon Valley power brokers to undermine democracy.

He continued: Its been an eye-opening whirlwind of a journey into a world that was once the stuff of sci-fi dreams, but is fast becoming reality. Searching for Satoshi is a glimpse into our dystopian future. And the scariest thing is: its not that far off.

Seeking Satoshi: The Mystery Bitcoin Creator will launch on C4s YouTube channel on 19 February, followed by streaming a week later and will TX on main channel 5 March
