Cardiff Productions hit format Take A Hike sells internationally
01 March

Leading Nations production company Cardiff Productions has confirmed a range of international sales of its hit format Take a Hike, the competitive walking series which sees contributors go head-to-head to showcase the best - and most beautiful - walks a country has to offer.

These sales see the global rise of a format which was developed by Cardiff Productions in Wales. Following its creation in 2020, the format was first broadcast as the six-part Welsh-language series Am Dro! on S4C. This popular factual show saw four keen walkers compete against each other in every episode, to have their favourite Welsh walking trail crowned the winner. After its national Welsh success, Cardiff Productions re-formatted the show into a 15-part series for BBC Two. Broadcast as Take A Hike and narrated by comedian Rhod Gilbert, the series launched in September 2021. In this format, five British walkers compete each week, with episodes stripped Monday-Friday, and a new walk broadcast every weeknight - with the winner announced at the end of the week.

The format was launched recently onto the international market by Cardiff Productions distribution partner Hat Trick International. Take a Hike has so far been optioned in France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Israel.

Narinder Minhas, Managing Director, Cardiff Productions, says: Take A Hike follows a brilliant model: it was developed for a Welsh broadcaster, turned into an English-speaking format, and then sold internationally. This strategy has a lot of potential and its something we want to replicate in the future. Were already developing two more innovative, entertaining formats with S4C, and we have high hopes theyll go on to achieve the same success.

Sarah Tong, Director of Sales, Hat Trick International, adds: Cardiff Productions is skilled at creating high-end factual programmes that are bold, innovative and popular. Take a Hike exemplifies this. Its a fantastic format which can transfer seamlessly from one territory to another and weve had a huge amount of interest in it.

Cardiff Productions is currently in production with Tan Frances first British show, Beauty and the Bleach, for BBC Two; Remarkable Rivers with Richard Hammond for Channel 4; and We are Black and British, which aired recently on BBC Two to much critical acclaim. The Guardian said it was the most intelligent reality TV show in recent memory a masterclass in how to have divisive discussions in an uplifting, constructive way.
