Balmoral Hotel opens its doors to Wonderhood
11 January

David Abrahams Wonderhood Studios has secured its debut Channel 5 commission a four-part ob-doc charting lockdown life in Edinburghs Balmoral Hotel.

The Balmoral Hotel: An Extraordinary Year spotlights the Rocco Forte-owned establishment for the first time in its 118-year-history, charting an unprecedented 12 months via staff members such as tea aficionado Omar, whisky expert Cameron and housekeeper Vicky.

The first episode kicks off with the hotel hosting the French rugby team during its Six Nations encounter with Scotland but the situation changes quickly with the initiation of a four-month lockdown due to coronavirus.

The order is C5s first for Abrahams production venture since launching in 2018, having picked up greenlights from BBC2, BBC3 and Channel 4. Last month, Wonderhood also acquired the rights to C4 format My Grandparents War from Paul Hamanns now-defunct Wild Pictures indie.

Daniel Pearl is commissioning editor for the Balmoral series, which is being exec produced by Wonderhoods Rebecca Templar and Samantha Anstiss, and directed by Rich House, Poor Houses Danny Fildes.

Pearl said: This series offers great characters, stories and just the sort of invitational viewing we all crave during these challenging times.

The PSBs have profiled hotels in a string of ob-docs over the past couple of years and C5s latest order suggests they dont plan to slow down.

Last week, C4 commissioned Spun Gold TV for Britains Most Luxurious Hotels [working title], charting life in the Corinthia, Langham and Chewton Glen.
